Testing and Operating Automated Vehicles at Babcock Ranch, Florida

When:  Sep 21, 2016 from 15:00 to 16:00 (ET)

This webinar will present Babcock Ranch's plan to introduce automated vehicles for use by its first phase residents and businesses in 2017. It will be the first community of its type to offer automated shared mobility vehicles to its residents while capturing their input on system performance and customer acceptance. Key features of the project include

  • Greenfield community
  • Living/learning lab
  • Low speed automated vehicles
  • Geo-fenced operations within Babcock Ranch
  • Serve the technical and industry development needs of its Strategic Partners

Babcock Ranch has adopted the following strategic approach:

  • Think BIG
  • Start SMALL
  • Learn FAST

The Babcock Ranch community is nature inspired, energy conscious, technologically advanced and motivated by health and wellness. It is a living-learning laboratory for new technologies and companies, will provide 1 gig fiber to all residents, and is committed to become an early adopter of driverless car technology.

The Grand Opening of Babcock Ranch is planned for first quarter 2017. The community is being planned as a greenfield community with low speed, automated, electric shared mobility vehicles available for use by its residents and businesses. Babcock Ranch is in the process of engaging the automated vehicle and shared mobility communities with the intent of issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to solicit companies and organizations to compete for Babcock Ranch Strategic Partnership contracts. The RFP's automated vehicle technical/service areas include:

  • Shared Mobility Vehicles
  • Autonomous Driving Systems Technology
  • System Integrator
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure
  • Maintenance and System Operations Providers
  • Mobile Device and Communications Network
  • Transportation Network Companies (TNC)

The intent is to post the RFP in mid-September, hold a system demonstration day in late October and award the strategic partnership contracts in late December 2016. The plan is to have 40 vehicles operating there in 2017 and ramping up to 400 vehicles by 2021.
